Chemists Club, New York
Written by Edward Beckwith on Sunday, November 12, 1939
Left Garrison this afternoon with four pieces of luggage of total weight 79 lbs, a weight planned not to exceed the allowance of 77 lbs on the
China Clipper . Will spend 4 days in New York and leave on Thursday evening Nov. 16th at 6 PM for San Francisco arriving on the evening of the 19th, a day ahead of the China Clipper which flies on Nov. 21, at 4 PM, reaching Manila on Nov. 27.
Most important question at present is whether to take John Archbold’s recorder for making records of native music. Have appointment tomorrow morning to look this over and decide whether it can be shipped so as to arrive in time to catch the expedition before they reach Manila.

The Chemists Club is still in existence. John Foster Archbold was the son of Ann Archbold, and friend of Ned Beckwith. The website of Florida’s Archbold Biological Station has a
brief history of the Archbold family.

This is amazing- like a time warp!
I would love to kknow what Mr. Beckwith would think of his daily journal entries being posted as daily blog entries 70 years later!
Thank you for this exciting glimpse into history, one day at a time.

A correction: John Foster Archbold was the younger brother of Anne (with an e) Archbold. He was born in 1877.

I read an article in my local newspaper about Michael Fenton who went on this journey. That article had this website link. I am looking forward to reading all the journal entries and looking at the photos. I'm also determined to visit the tropical garden in Miami some time. Thank you for creating this site!
