Chicago (en route)

Written by Edward Beckwith on Friday, November 17, 1939

Had very good sleep, and on arriving at Chicago drove to Santa Fe station where I had breakfast. Felt better this morning than for some time. Took short walk during 2 hour wait. Now on board “the Chief” Santa Fe streamliner waiting to start. Left at 12 noon. Track seemed very rough after 20th Century.

Slept part of afternoon and then went to bed at 8. Air conditioning in room was very unpleasant. Managed to plug the air conditioning inlet with baggage & coat only to find much later that there was a valve to turn it off.

Two good books on this era's railroads: Steve Glichinsky. 1997. Santa Fe Railway and William Yenne. 2005. The Santa Fe Chiefs.
