On train at Barstow, California

Had good night. Felt better getting down to low altitude again. Only few hundred feet here while highest was 6900 ft.

Had breakfast in lunch room. Weather clear and perfect cool temperature.

Remarkable railway over 4000 ft pass & then through tunnels and curves to sea level. Long day through somewhat interesting oil fields & orange grove country – mostly very arid in spite of irrigation. Arrived at 8:30 taking taxi to St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Baggage handled in rapid slap dash manner but quiet old fashioned hotel was very restful after long train trip.
