Dumaguete, Negros Island, Philippines

Written by Edward Beckwith on Tuesday, January 16, 1940

At 3 A.M. David was on deck while we were passing the small town of Dumaguete on Negros. He said there was a botanist there he wanted to see so they put in and anchored. Did not go ashore. Light rain around 8 AM. David’s botanist was a Mr. Chapman, and they drove to the mountain, up about 1800 ft and had a very interesting visit. Went ashore later and found I could buy almost all photo chemicals I had brought all the way from N.Y. Silliman University is here, quite a remarkable institution to find in this out of the way place.

Fenton took me out on the launch and I took 16 Kodachromes of the exterior decorations of the junk.

Looked at my Kodachrome film in the refrigerator and found that water had got into the can container. Dried every one out and hope films are all right.

Carefully photographed two specimens in black and white and color. In afternoon developed two rolls of David’s and one of Fenton’s. We started with a good storm breeze making 5 knots with the next stop the port of Zamboanga.

Took the watch 6 to 8 P.M.

Very busy day with no rest

Mr. Chapman was Dr. James W. Chapman, the head of the science department at Silliman University. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Archive holds several of his letters to David & Marian Fairchild in which he describes his capture during the war and eventual return to the United States.
