Tahuna to Baai van Dago, Sangir Besar, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Wednesday, January 31, 1940

Hugo Curran and a crowd of local children
Hugo Curran and a crowd of local children in Baai van Dago, Sangir Besar, Indonesia. Photographed by David Fairchild at twilight.
Started at 6 A.M. and followed the Sangir coast southward to Dago, anchoring in the well protected harbor at about 10 A.M. Did not go ashore in the morning but took advantage of the favourable opportunity to photograph specimens and develop.

Slept in my berth in the afternoon. Marian and Anne called to me at 4:30 and wanted me to go ashore with them. We went in a native boat and were met at the town by a crowd of children. They followed us on a road outside the town singing and laughing. The town was very primitive.

We returned in the same native boat and were on exhibition to the last moment. The crowd was good humoured and friendly. Some native officials neatly dressed came out to the boat. Marian showed some concern that I was working too hard at developing. Today I am up to date except for a roll of Anne’s and one of David’s.

Possible to sleep on deck but decided to sleep below as my cabin has proved airy and comfortable.
