Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Tuesday, February 6, 1940

North Sulawesi near Manado
North Sulawesi near Manado, Indonesia, photographed in 2009 by Eustaquio Santimano.
Had good, restful sleep, the first time on shore for some time. Breakfast with David & Marian. We returned to the boat to get some things, mainly medicines for Marian. Air mailed 5 Kodachromes at cost of 11.30 guilders (over 4 dollars). Then ordered 100 post cards of Cheng Ho at .15 Dutch cents each (the price having come down overnight from .35 cents each), and 12 contact prints of Anne & Marian swimming. Also bought 12 rolls Eastman’s XX Tropical packed 120 as I thought the contrast in David’s film was more suitable for my enlarger than with Agfa Supreme film. The photo store sent a boy to show me a good barber & I gave him .10. The boy refused to accept it & hung around the barber shop demanding more. He followed me for sometime down the street but I speeded up and finally shook him.

At 2:30 P.M., David, Anne, Hugo & I went for a drive across the end of the peninsular to the shore on the other side. The whole country was disappointing, thickly populated and civilized with little variety to it & only a good view of the volcano Kalabat made it interesting. Took a few pictures. Marian stayed at home. Turned in at 9 P.M.
