Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Saturday, February 17, 1940

At 10 AM David was called to the telephone my Mr. Symons, Secretary to the Resident, who said a cable had been received from Batavia that we might keep the film. Both cables were sent to the hotel and I obtained them. The last one said “received from Batavia Rut heden inzake fotos jacht Chengho acc” Signed cgmt.

Believe incident closed. Only remaining act is to present the Resident with one of the objectionable post cards at lunch tomorrow.

David told me later that they had intended at first to forward all films to Batavia and could not understand it that the Kodachromes could not be developed there.

The Resident asked for our word that if any panorama of the coast appeared in the film I would destroy it.

We took a drive in the afternoon on the road that runs west along the coast, the most beautiful road I have seen here.
