Took daylight flashlight portraits of Anne, David, Ted, Fant, and Daan. Results so far with flash were very impressive. Much could be done by this method in the jungle. Fenton developed film. Very satisfactory of Anne, Daan, and fair one of Ted.
No further news about our trip. David typed a letter to be shown to Residents. Typed the following at David’s request:
In case of my death, I wish to leave any films which represent subjects of botanical interest and were made on the Fairchild Tropical Expedition of 1939-40, starting from the date Dec. 1, 1939, delivered to the Fairchild Tropical Gardens Inc. of Coconut Grove, Florida.
March 2, 1940
Much mud came down the harbor making it necessary to wash films in fresh water.
Slept on my berth till 5 P.M. Anne called me earlier and wanted me to go ashore but I did not go. Went ashore with Hugo to get information relating to proposed trip. Resident not in.
Stopped at Mr. De Witte’s, where Daan had just returned with him from snipe shooting. He gave us much information.
Route from Poso as follows:
- Poso to Tentena on Poso Lake (car)
- Tentena to Pindolo (boat)
- Pendolo to Masamba (horse)
- Masamba to Makale (car)
- Makale to Enrekang (car)
- Enrekang to Pare Pare (car)
- Pare Pare to Makassar (car)
Main problem now has to get to Poso. Asked about getting a boy and he said difficult to find one who spoke English.
Returned late and turned in early feeling a little as though I had a cold or something going on. Sent letter and postal to Mary.
