Hugo did not like the looks of three places on my legs resulting from abrasions I got in Donggala and he thought they were on the way to becoming tropical ulcers. They certainly are taking much longer to heal than former scratches but I rather think they will be all right. There seemed to be two stages in the formation of these ulcers, which are very common.

The first stage is painful and red, the second painless with a small raw spot in the center which does not heal for a long time.

We left films of the Magao of Kulawi and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Esser, and Dann’s cannon at Donggala, to be printed or enlarged. Called on Harbor Master — no word from David. Then saw Mr. Endert (F.H.) head of Forestry, and had a long talk with him. At the end Hugo became very enthusiastic about taking a 5 day trip to Masamba and investigating the country on the way. He wanted to start tomorrow but I refused to go unless we first had a telegram of authorization from David and some idea of the party’s plan.

Hugo has reached the end of his funds and must depend on my financial aid to tide him over. It was his understanding with David that if he ran out I could help and David would pay me back.

We composed the following telegram:

Fairchild

Care Havenmeister

Surabaya

Wish immediate authorization make five day important collecting trip Masamba. Please telegraph your plans

Beckcurran

The trip looks very promising from the collecting angle and I hope we hear from David quickly. We do not understand it that he has not cabled us already.

After this we made a call on the Resident, Mr. Terlaag, at his offices. We had no favours to ask and only stayed a short time.

A good, cold bottle of Pilsner beer was fine after this active morning.
