Raha, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Saturday, April 27, 1940

My birthday but I decided not to say anything about it.

David has asked me to send one of the films in whenever I have duplicates, to Florida. This necessitated marking all films with a number so I spent all morning on it, while we went through the quiet waters of the Booton Strait.

We anchored at 4:30 off the town of Raha, situated off the south east coast of Celebes on an island about 100 Kms long. We went on shore and called on the Asst. Res. or Controlleur, whichever he was – as I do not think anyone learned his name. His attractive Dutch wife with her three children was there, the only white women in the town. It must have been a strange life for two years.

The town was uninteresting and malarial. Hugo went for a short trip, but had nothing to report. We returned to the boat in time for dinner.
