Wowoni to Buru Island, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Tuesday, April 30, 1940

Coast of Buru Island, Indonesia
Coast of Buru Island, Indonesia. Photographed by Edward Beckwith.
A calm sea and so warm that I slept most of the night on deck in pajamas with no covering.

Anne was after me all morning, she wanted one of my sarongs to make a costume for Kilkenny. I did not let her have one. Also numerous other things, I also kept out of the deck house after the non pipe smoking edict.

Toward 3 P.M. we sighted one of the high mountains of Buru, about 7000 ft. This was the first sight of the Moluccas. The island should be distinctly interesting, with its many extinct volcanoes and lack of a town. Our first anchorage will be on the west side inside an island through a narrow passage.

I was asleep in my cabin this morning and Anne wanted to wake me up but Marian would not let her, so the latter told me later.

Talked with Ted on the upper deck and enjoyed the smooth open expanse of the Banda Sea.

Anne tried the air conditioning in the deck house. It worked well but I did not think it an improvement as I am not bothered by the heat.
