Manipa Island, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Monday, May 6, 1940

Decks were wet last evening and everyone slept below. I seemed to sleep very well. Hugo did not. It was rather hot and close.

David went off early and wanted me to go with him but I stayed on board to photograph some specimens which might fade.

Anne went to the lighthouse and brought back the keeper and his family.

David did not find very much but Hugo sent back an enormous red spike on a stem with large leaves which no one discovered until it had wilted. David found me and made me hurry and take it before it wilted any more. It was the Clerodendrum sp. and Hugo said later there were many within 300 yards of the shore. David had never seen it. Luckily he secured four seeds. I said it looked like a rag carpet which David thought it was a good description.

Anne and I went out in the big launch later to try and photograph the very picturesque island with the lighthouse on it. It was rather dark but I took two.
