Ambon, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Thursday, May 9, 1940

Mountain trail, Ambon, Indonesia
Mountain trail, Ambon, Indonesia. Photographed in 2007 by Roberto Verzo.
Started developing early. Captain came in and gave me two letters from MPB, one April 6, one from de Witte thanking me for his camera and one from Proctor Cooper. Hugo came in on his way to the mountains for the day. David and Anne came in for a few moments. Fenton helped all morning and we finished just after lunch. Had a hair cut and stopped for prints, paying 31.25. They were fairly well done. Ted also came in this morning. Told me the doctor said he had a tapeworm. My private opinion is that this is a wrong diagnosis. In addition to all these visitors, the fanatical missionary, Mr. Devin, came in with his three sons. He tried to convert Fenton yesterday. Developing was rather difficult under these conditions, but everything went off all right.

In the evening everyone went to the Hamel’s house to see 8 mm (black and white) movies of Batchian, Aram, Buru, and New Guinea. The films were quite good and very interesting although David was slightly disappointed on Batchian, an island which he has long wanted to visit. Those of the New Guinea natives were the most interesting. In the middle of the performance Anne asked me to stop smoking my pipe. Hugo told me later that he thought her manner was insulting but I did not take it seriously. Anne has a naturally disagreeable and dictatorial manner.

Fenton informed me that both he and Hugo were madly in love with the Resident’s daughter.
