Salipogot Island, Indonesia

Written by Edward Beckwith on Wednesday, May 22, 1940

After some hurried photographing of yesterday’s specimens, we raised the anchor and started north for the Bacan coast at 9:30. I did all the navigating with Ted at the wheel. He took the course which I determined by observations. We anchored at 11:20 off some interesting small island near the northern end of Bacan.

We were very anxious to be unobserved. The present anchorage was more conspicuous than the last and the KPM steamer will come by here on May 26.  We plan to move before then.

At about 3 PM Hugo went off alone in the boat (except for Ah Fook to run it) on one of his lone specimen hunting trips. He landed on Batjan and the launch came back with directions to pick him up on the shore at 6 PM.

I read Wallace aloud to Anne and Marian, the account of his trip in a prau from Macassar to the Kai Islands. Afterward I took a nap while Anne and Marian went shell hunting.

At 7:30 PM I heard a discussion on deck about Hugo, who had not yet returned. David and Marian were getting anxious. Ah Fook and Ah Gun went ashore and lit a light at the point where Hugo had landed. He did not come back or respond to repeated calls.

Anne was not at all concerned and said she and her family at different times had got lost and spent the night out.

I played Chinese checkers with Anne until 11:30.
