Manila, Philippines

Written by Edward Beckwith on Wednesday, July 10, 1940

Rain all last night and heavy wind this morning, completing one week of almost continuous rain.

Fenton and Dorothy Saunders came in.

Went to Internal Revenue Office and met David and Marian to make tax declaration in connection with leaving Manila. Then American Express where they took my passport preparatory to making out ticket for U.S., also vaccination certificate.

Marian had received letter from Anne in which she said “Has David gotten over his grumps?” Received letter from Mrs. Curran asking me to come to Los Banos.

Hugo and Yankey came in.

Ted and Fenton have decided to go to Hong Kong before going to Java. They have done all they could to get me to stay and go along with them. David was very disapproving about Fenton going to Java. He thought there were no prospects there and that Daan’s influence was bad. I do not agree with him and think it is the best thing for both for the present. Ted gave me credit for helping him to decide.

Mrs. Marriner came in and stayed some time. Incidentally she took a bath in our tub. She and Ted left together at 7:30. My cold still bothersome.
