Manila, Philippines

Written by Edward Beckwith on Wednesday, July 17, 1940

Anne called up to ask for the Yankey’s telephone number. Marian called up to ask me to go with her to see Anne and get the 500 guilders she and David had left on the boat. I suggested to Marian that she let me ask Anne about it. Anne boards the Clipper tomorrow night for San Francisco. This will end another complicated situation with a feeling of relief when Anne is out of the way.

Hugo called up to say he would not go to Los Baños today but wanted me to come to his sister’s with Anne to show her movies of the junk. Afterward I drove with Anne to the George Fairchilds and saw David and Marian. Anne was not at all friendly with them and was rather disagreeable. It looked as though the break was a permanent one. The main object of the call was to give Marian the 500 guilders she had left on the junk by mistake. Anne did not say goodbye to her or David although she leaves on the Clipper on Friday. I drove back with Anne and she was still in a bad humor from seeing David and Marian. I thought at first that she was going to leave me without saying goodbye.
